1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 The man's face set in sullen defiance.
2. Lord St. Simon shook his head. "I am afraid that it will takewiser heads than yours or mine," he remarked, and bowing in a stately,old-fashioned manner he departed.
3. "Why, Mr. Holmes, I thought you knew things," said he. "I suppose, then, if you have never heard of Godfrey Staunton, you don't knowCyril Overton either?"
5. "`Oh yes.'
6. "Yesterday, however, just as I was thinking of leaving the office,my clerk entered to say there was a gentleman waiting who wished tosee me upon business. He brought up a card, too, with the name of'Colonel Lysander Stark' engraved upon it. Close at his heels came thecolonel himself, a man rather over the middle size, but of anexceeding thinness. I do not think that I have ever seen so thin aman. His whole face sharpened away into nose and chin, and the skin ofhis cheeks was drawn quite tense over his outstanding bones. Yetthis emaciation seemed to be his natural habit, and due to no disease, for his eye was bright his step brisk, and his bearing assured. He wasplainly but neatly dressed, and his age, I should judge, would benearer forty than thirty.

1. "I can assure you," said Holmes, "that every essential is alreadyknown. We know that you were pressed for money; that you took animpress of the keys which your brother held; and that you entered intoa correspondence with Oberstein, who answered your letters through theadvertisement columns of the Daily Telegraph. We are aware that youwent down to the office in the fog on Monday night, but that youwere seen and followed by young Cadogan West, who had probably someprevious reason to suspect you. He saw your theft, but could notgive the alarm, as it was just possible that you were taking thepapers to your brother in London. Leaving all his private concerns, like the good citizen that he was, he followed you closely in thefog and kept at your heels until you reached this very house. There heintervened, and then it was, Colonel Walter, that to treason you addedthe more terrible crime of murder."
2. "Ha! You put me off, do you?" said our new visitor, taking a stepforward and shaking his hunting-crop. "I know you, you scoundrel! Ihave heard of you before. You are Holmes, the meddler."My friend smiled.
3. "Cut out the poetry, Watson," said Holmes severely. "I note thatit was a high brick wall."
4. "The alarm had reached Scotland Yard by this time, and Mr. Forbes, the detective, came round at once and took up the case with a greatdeal of energy. We hired a hansom, and in half an hour we were atthe address which had been given to us. A young woman opened the door, who proved to be Mrs. Tangey's eldest daughter. Her mother had notcome back yet, and we were shown into the front room to wait."About ten minutes later a knock came at the door, and here wemade the one serious mistake for which I blame myself. Instead ofopening the door ourselves, we allowed the girl to do so. We heard hersay, 'Mother, there are two men in the house waiting to see you,'and an instant afterwards we heard the patter of feet rushing down thepassage. Forbes flung open the door, and we both ran into the backroom or kitchen, but the woman had got there before us. She staredat us with defiant eyes, and then, suddenly recognizing me, anexpression of absolute astonishment came over her face."'Why, if it isn't Mr. Phelps, of the office!' she cried."'Come, come, who did you think we were when you ran away fromus?' asked my companion.
5. "Certainly, Mr. Holmes."
6. "No, I shall commence with the City. Just ring the bell andthe maid will bring up your coffee."

1. "Come, come, madam, it is useless. Give up the letter."She darted to the bell.
2. "Well, I will tell you," he said. "Why should I not? And yet Ihate to think of this old scandal gaining a new lease of life. Did youever hear of Dawson and Neligan?"
3. 1927
4. "I am going to force my way in and see for myself who is in thehouse. I wish you both to be there as witnesses."
5. "I hope you observed all precautions, Mrs. Hudson?" said Holmes."I went to it on my knees, sir, just as you told me."
6. "No, I cannot."

1. "You are a good fellow," said he. "I had misjudged you. I thankheaven that my compunction at leaving poor Staunton all alone inthis plight caused me to turn my carriage back and so to make youracquaintance. Knowing as much as you do, the situation is veryeasily explained. A year ago Godfrey Staunton lodged in London for atime and became passionately attached to his landlady's daughter, whomhe married. She was as good as she was beautiful and as intelligent asshe was good. No man need be ashamed of such a wife. But Godfrey wasthe heir to this crabbed old nobleman, and it was quite certain thatthe news of his marriage would have been the end of his inheritance. Iknew the lad well, and I loved him for his many excellent qualities. Idid all I could to help him to keep things straight. We did our verybest to keep the thing from everyone, for, when once such a whispergets about, it is not long before everyone has heard it. Thanks tothis lonely cottage and his own discretion, Godfrey has up to nowsucceeded. Their secret was known to no one save to me and to oneexcellent servant, who has at present gone for assistance toTrumpington. But at last there came a terrible blow in the shape ofdangerous illness to his wife. It was consumption of the most virulentkind. The poor boy was half crazed with grief, and yet he had to go toLondon to play this match, for he could not get out of it withoutexplanations which would expose his secret. I tried to cheer him up bywire, and he sent me one in reply, imploring me to do all I could. This was the telegram which you appear in some inexplicable way tohave seen. I did not tell him how urgent the danger was, for I knewthat he could do no good here, but I sent the truth to the girl'sfather, and he very injudiciously communicated it to Godfrey. Theresult was that he came straight away in a state bordering onfrenzy, and has remained in the same state, kneeling at the end of herbed, until this morning death put an end to her sufferings. That isall, Mr. Holmes, and I am sure that I can rely upon your discretionand that of your friend."
2. "'We may find something else of Charles the First,' I cried, asthe probable meaning of the first two questions of the Ritual brokesuddenly upon me. 'Let me see the contents of the bag which you fishedfrom the mere.'
3. "'Photography is one of my hobbies,' said he. 'I have made my darkroom up there. But, dear me! what an observant young lady we have comeupon. Who would have believed it?' He spoke in a jesting tone, butthere was no jest in his eyes as he looked at me. I read suspicionthere and annoyance, but no jest.
4、 "Hardly enough, Mr. Holmes!" the old man cried in a high screamingvoice, with extraordinary malignancy upon his face. He got betweenus and the door as he spoke, and he shook his two hands at us withfurious passion. "You can hardly get out of it so easily as that." Hisface was convulsed, and he grinned and gibbered at us in his senselessrage. I am convinced that we should have had to fight our way out ofthe room if Mr. Bennett had not intervened.
5、 "Well, sir, there is an old ruined chapel in the park. It is soold that nobody could fix its date. And under it there's a crypt whichhas a bad name among us. It's a dark, damp, lonely place by day, butthere are few in that county that would have the nerve to go near itat night. But master's not afraid. He never feared anything in hislife. But what is he doing there in the night-time?"

  • 李永新 08-03

"'"On the contrary, I think that we have both shown extraordinarypatience towards him," I answered.

  • 王小永 08-03

"Exactly. But he received it on that day?"

  • 玛丽亚-格罗芙 08-03

"That is the name," he said. "You cannot effect an arrest untilto-morrow night at the earliest. I should prefer that you do notmention my name at all in connection with the case, as I choose tobe only associated with those crimes which present some difficultyin their solution. Come on, Watson." We strode off together to thestation, leaving Lestrade still staring with a delighted face at thecard which Holmes had thrown him.

"You will find it rather disconnected, I fear, and there may proveto be little relation between the different incidents of which Ispeak. On the very first day that I was at the Copper Beeches, Mr.Rucastle took me to a small outhouse which stands near the kitchendoor. As we approached it I heard the sharp rattling of a chain, andthe sound as of a large animal moving about.

  • 杨珊珊 08-01

"Can you throw any light upon that?"

  • 杨希雨 07-31

"Well, well, I must not be selfish," said he, with a smile, as bepushed back his chair from the breakfast-table. "The community iscertainly the gainer, and no one the loser, save the poorout-of-work specialist, whose occupation has gone. With that man inthe field, one's morning paper presented infinite possibilities. Oftenit was only the smallest trace, Watson, the faintest indication, andyet it was enough to tell me that the great malignant brain was there,as the gentlest tremors of the edges of the web remind one of the foulspider which lurks in the centre. Petty thefts, wanton assaults, purposeless outrage- to the man who held the clue all could beworked into one connected whole. To the scientific student of thehigher criminal world, no capital in Europe offered the advantageswhich London then possessed. But now-" He shrugged his shoulders inhumorous deprecation of the state of things which he had himselfdone so much to produce.

{ "Who keeps Lady Beatrice Falder company?" he asked at last."There is her maid, Carrie Evans. She has been with her this fiveyears."

  • 王柏杰 07-29

      "What is the flaw, Holmes?"
